where the city almost ends, people

aren’t afraid to leave their trash.

Between the rows of pink and orange

spray-painted property markers

stands a shining white orchard

of cast-off refrigerators, in their day

designed for keeping dead things

dead a little longer, their obsolete

chromium handles and hinges

blindingly bright and burning

to the touch in the hot noon air

as mirages waver in the parking lots.

For some it’s a place made strange

by the reports of an escaped peacock
